Wanangkura Playground
North West
Hamilton Road, South Hedland
A dynamic, inclusive and bespoke playspace design was prepared for the Town of Port Hedland in response to their brief to revitalise the Wanangkura Playspace, also known as the Kevin Scott Playspace. Our design prioritised on making connections to the local area and providing play opportunities that were relevant and meaningful for the children of South Hedland. The Royal Flying Doctor’s Plane encourage children to engage in imaginative role play as they take on the roles of doctors, nurses and pilots in an effort to help sick and injured patients needing urgent medical care. The Custom Graphic Jeep was created using an original artwork from a local indigenous community member. The children’s reactions to this play element are heart-warming as they acknowledge the artwork and stories embedded in traditional indigenous artistic pieces. Involvement from the community in the creation of a unique play space gives a sense of ownership and the community are more likely to take pride in their new playspace, thus reducing the risk of vandalism. All ages and abilities enjoy a game of connect four on the play panel and playing a tune together on the musically scaled Rainbow Chimes. Take a ride on Kylie the Kangaroo springer and let your imagination take you on an action packed adventure through the North West of Western Australia.
